Introduction to UPES

University Petroleum and Energy Studies or popularly known as UPES was founded in 2003 by UPES Act of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand. The university is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2 (f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and The Department of Industrial & Scientific Research (DISR), a division of the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, has recognized the university as a Scientific and Research Organization. The legal programs are recognized by the Bar Council of India.

UPES has two campuses in Dehradun named as UPES Bidholi & UPES Kandoli. The university has diverse course opportunities for all stream students (PCM, PCM, PCMB, Commerce and Humanities) with industry aligned specializations and is NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) accredited with Grade ‘A’ and a CGPA of 3.02.

The university’s global rank is 46th by NIRF Ranking while School of Law is ranked at 43, Management at 41 & Engineering at 42. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, UPES is the No. 1 Private University in terms of academic reputation.

UPES has partnerships with international universities in Canada, Germany, the United States of America (USA), Australia, and the United Kingdom (UK). The goal of this program is to offer a cost-effective, hassle-free option for foreign study. Partner universities include Australia’s University of Queensland, Bond University (Gold Coast), Nottingham Trent University, Aberdeen University, University of Essex, Goldsmith, London University, Virginia CommonWealth University, GISMA Germany’s University of Applied Sciences, and Canada West University.

Overview of Global Pathway Program

  • UPES offers a Global Pathway Program (GPP) for students in Engineering, Computer Science, Management, Design and Liberal Arts.

  • The program offers 2+2 and 2+1 programs. 2+2 means 2 years in UPES and 2 years in International University, and 2+1 means 2 years in UPES and 1 year in International University.

  • Students receive an International Degree from the enrolled university and a Diploma or Certificate from UPES by following UGCs guidelines.

  • UPES provides affordable credit transfers to international partner universities through the Department of International Affairs, ensuring a smooth transaction process for students studying abroad.

  • The GPP is cost-effective, saving 45-65% of the cost, and provides global job opportunities.

Placement and Career Development

UPES, a leading university, has a 91% placement record in 2023-24, with strong ties with 750+ recruiters. The university aims to prepare students for the competitive world by offering a lifetime assurance of placement through its 5 years alumni package. UPES is the first university to receive a 5 star rating for employability from QS ratings. A mandatory summer internship is offered to all graduate and postgraduate students, allowing them to better understand the working environment of companies. The university uses the 3Es (Exampathways, Employability, and Entrepreneurship) for placement training, including pre-interviews, guest lectures, and LinkedIn profile classes. The EDGE platform enhances analytical reading and writing abilities, critical reasoning analysis, and understanding analogies and implementations. Admission & Scholarship

UPES offers admission to various courses through merits, the UPES entrance exam, and other competitive exams. Only 25% of seats are designated for direct admission. UPES accepts both offline and online applications with registration procedures involving basic information, registration payment, academic information, and personal details.

Scholarships include Entry Level Scholarship, Domicile, Jyoti Scholarship (EWS), Vijay Scholarship (Sports Scholarship), Alumni Scholarship, International Student Scholarship, and MBA Scholarship.

25% of scholarships are awarded based on residence and to the Global Pathway Program too. Scholarships range from 10-30% based on merit and competitive exams which is applicable on first year’s tuition fees.

25 seats are reserved for members of the armed forces and paramilitary forces, while liberal studies and B.Tech have 10% and 30% scholarships on first 100 and 30 admission respectively. MBA scholarships are limited to 100 recipients and awarded on a first-cum-first-serve basis.

UPES’s Jyoti Scholarship is for deserving yet underprivileged pupils but applicants didn’t have household income more than 8 lakhs. National and international athletes competing in various sports are eligible for the 35-100% Vijay Scholarship.
